Cassandra Alpers, BS
Mental Health Intern
Cassandra Alpers is currently serving as a mental health intern at our Champaign at the Crossing clinic. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education (LBS-1) and is presently pursuing her Master of Social Work (MSW).
In her role, Cassandra provides individual therapy to clients across all age groups. Her therapeutic approach is rooted in recognizing individual strengths and understanding the impact of trauma. She also embraces a neurodivergent-affirming methodology.
Cassandra works with all populations, but particularly enjoys working with children and adults who are neurodiverse. She explains, “I am passionate about helping neurodiverse individuals, especially those with ADHD, learn to advocate for themselves in the school, work, or healthcare setting.”
Cassandra is committed to fostering a therapeutic environment that is safe, accepting, and compassionate. She tailors her approach to each client’s unique needs, helping them uncover their inherent resilience, recognize their strengths, and cultivate self-compassion.
Before embarking on her journey to earn an MSW, Cassandra spent several years as a special education teacher in the Champaign-Urbana area. During her tenure, she worked with a diverse group of students aged 2 to 22 years. Her passion for advocating for her students and their families, fueled her desire to take on a more robust advocacy role, leading her to the field of social work.
Cassandra has a very strong belief in the healing power of community. She explains, “No matter who or what you consider your community to be (whether it is your friends, family, neighborhood, etc.) connecting with a community allows you to feel seen and heard, and gives you a safe space to heal.”
Outside of her professional life, Cassandra is an active member of the Champaign-Urbana community. She regularly volunteers at the Wesley Food Pantry, where she once interned. In her leisure time, she enjoys reading, cooking and baking, raising her dog Maya, and is currently honing her skills in crochet.
