About That Serotonin…

An article about serotonin and depression, recently published in Molecular Psychiatry, encouraged the providers at Two Roads Wellness Clinic to continue to provide a holistic approach to our patients. Providing medication may help to manage some of the symptoms that people experience, but there is so much more to be discussed.

“The idea that depression is the result of abnormalities in brain chemicals, particularly serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT), has been influential for decades, and provides an important justification for the use of antidepressants. A link between lowered serotonin and depression was first suggested in the 1960s, and widely publicized from the 1990s with the advent of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants. Although it has been questioned more recently, the serotonin theory of depression remains influential” (Moncrieff, et al, 2022).

“This review suggests that the huge research effort based on the serotonin hypothesis has not produced convincing evidence of a biochemical basis to depression. This is consistent with research on many other biological markers. We suggest it is time to acknowledge that the serotonin theory of depression is not empirically substantiated” (Moncrieff, et al, 2022).

At Two Roads Wellness Clinic, we take the time to review and discuss your family history, sleep, nutrition, and social support. We offer genetic, microbiome, and other testing to evaluate and recommend healthy lifestyle modifications that will help manage your symptoms and diagnosis. Our providers can help you identify and understand the connections between symptoms of stress, mood, inadequate sleep, and inflammation in the body. In addition, we offer mental health therapy, massage therapy, life coaching, physical therapy, infrared sauna, and IV therapy to support you entirely.
