Understanding How Your Medication Works

Medication is prescribed to manage symptoms, treat underlying conditions, or to help the body restore balance. Each medication works differently.  Some medications calm inflammation, some adjust chemical signals, some fight infection, and others support organ function.

It’s important to remember that medications don’t always work quickly or overnight. Some provide relief within hours, while others take days or even weeks before you notice real improvement. Keep taking your medication as prescribed, even if you don’t feel an immediate change. Consistency is key.

Here’s an example:

When Alex started medication for anxiety, he expected to feel calm right away. The first week, he actually felt a bit more restless and wasn’t sure it was helping. His provider encouraged him to keep going and check in after a few weeks. By week four, Alex noticed he wasn’t panicking as often and could handle daily stress without feeling overwhelmed. Staying consistent made the difference.

Just like Alex, it’s normal if progress takes time. The important thing is to give your medication a fair chance to work.

Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any of the following:

  1. The medication doesn’t seem to be working.  For example: Your symptoms aren’t improving after the time your provider said to expect results.  Your condition gets worse even though you’re taking it as prescribed. OR You feel the medication’s effects don’t last as long as they should

  2. You experience serious negative side effects.  For Example: You develop new or worsening symptoms such as rash, swelling, dizziness, or stomach upset. You experience an allergic reaction (swelling, shortness of breath, hives - please call 911 right away). OR The medication’s side effects interfere with daily life.

  3. You have difficulty taking it. For Example: You’re missing doses due to cost, side effects, or confusion about instructions. OR You start another medication or supplement that might interact
